About Scott Resources
Our History
In 1902, what was to become the Scott Rose Quartz Mine, was discovered near Custer, SD by Samuel Scott while his family and he were out gathering wild raspberries. The mine is in the heart of the Black Hills. It has been owned and mined by the Scott family since its discovery.
The original vein was about 1200 feet long by 50 feet wide and 75 feet high. The vein is located on the face of a granite mountain. (Although the mine is worked primarily for its spectacular rose quartz; mica, feldspar, and beryl are also found and harvested at the site.) The color and quality of the rose quartz is exceptional and much of the material is of gem quality. Although much rose quartz can fade, the material from the Scott mine retains its color well over time. The
colors range from pink to a watermelon rose. The quartz is sold around the world because of its translucency and color.
It is interesting to note, Mrs. Edna Scott, who owned and ran the mine for many years in the 1920s, presented a necklace of rose quartz to Mrs. Coolidge at a dedication ceremony of the Community Hall in Custer supported by the Ladies Civic Club in 1927. The gem quality specimens are shipped around the world for use in jewelry.
Over the decades, the mine has been passed down through the Scott family. It is now being harvested by Carl Scott, a great grandson of Samuel’s. He continues to supply us with high quality rose quartz to this day, and you will find it in many of our kits.
Scott Resources was named to honor Dr. George Scott who established the original Scott Resources which he founded in the 1970s. As an educator, he made materials to be used by anyone
interested in geology.
Overall, the many companies affiliated with the Scott name have been making rock, mineral, and fossil collections for over 100 years. Our mission is still the same: to provide quality rock, mineral and fossil specimens, collections, and other products to students of geology using current and proven geologic principles.

A special thanks to our many dealers who provide our products to their customers, schools, parents, and grandparents, who want kids to explore the world of rocks, minerals, and fossils through hands on learning.
As our long-time employee, Brad, reminds us daily let’s “Keep on rockin’! “
